Solving homelessness, quotes for creativity and Net Zero by 2050
Reasons to be hopeful: 1,2,3...
I believe in what I call ‘defiant hope.’ This is not blind faith or passive optimism; it’s about waking up every morning and—despite all evidence to the contrary—choosing to believe a better world is possible and then taking steps to bring that world about.
The problem is that your brain has an in-built negativity bias, designed to keep you safe, and media outlets disproportionately report bad news. All of which can leave you (and me!) feeling like the world is a bad place and there’s nothing we can do to change that.
So, this new weekly round-up of reasons to be hopeful is my attempt to counter that, to reconnect you with all the good out there and to support you in choosing hope.
If you want more, sign up for ‘Cultivating Hope’, which will help you to move through feelings of hopelessness, reconnect with the natural world and find the positive change in the world that you can actually enjoy bringing about.

Norway is proving that homelessness is a problem that can be solved
“Compared to major hubs like Paris, London and New York — and indeed almost every other city in the world — there are barely any people living and sleeping on the streets [of Oslo]. This is because Norway, a country of 5.6 million people, is making homelessness history.
“Zero homelessness is our main common goal,” says Hermund Urstad, senior adviser at Husbanken, the government agency charged with managing Norway’s housing policy. “We believe nobody should be homeless. Everyone has the right to a home.”

Quotes for creativity from a communal ‘commonplace book’ right here on Suback
“Focused, energetic creativity—the kind I dream of but don’t always achieve—requires sustenance. That sustenance takes many forms: sometimes I need lots of books, sometimes I need quiet time in nature, sometimes I need community. Different projects (and different moments in our lives) require different kinds of fuel.
“Over the past two weeks, I’ve been sustained by our unfolding communal commonplace book—living and growing in Noted’s chat. I thought you might also welcome some inspiration from some of the quotes we’ve gathered so far. I hope they offer sustenance for your creativity! They certainly have for me.”

Net Zero by 2050 is still within reach for the UK
“It’s an ambitious goal and one often met with scepticism. Can the UK really achieve net-zero emissions by 2050? If anyone could make an educated assessment, it would be the government’s advisory body: the Climate Change Committee (CCC). This week, in its annual progress report on emissions, it said that the target just might be within reach, if we stay the course.
”Driven by a significant uptick in renewables, with further progress predicted as EVs continue to gain popularity, experts from the CCC were cautiously optimistic. ‘The UK can be proud of our progress in reducing emissions. We’ve cut them by over 50% since 1990,’ said committee chair Piers Forster.”
